Nicole van Vuuren explores textile repurposing as a subversion of value systems, transforming waste into narratives of craft and continuity. Traditional craft techniques like patchworking, quilting, and weaving are reimagined in contemporary contexts which bind together industry offcuts to create garments that reframe waste as embellishment

Nicole van Vuuren’s esoteric, process driven approach to making has informed the circular re-use of scraps within each garment. Through the act of cutting, small offcuts are inevitably created, all of which are re-worked into textiles, from large patches right down to the smallest overlocking scraps and threads, creating a closed loop design system  that celebrates imperfection and sustainability.

 

The garments themselves are informed by the act of wearing, designed to be multi purpose, and adjustable to fit a diverse range of bodies. Wearing is the final act of design, leaving the wearer to interpret and style the piece as they choose.

 

Through patchwork the act of repair is designed into the garment, encouraging the wearer to add in their own stitches, patches and mending as the garments grow with them, becoming a narrative for the wearer and garment alike.

 

Based in Karangahape Road, Tāmaki Makaurau, the brand navigates the space between ready-to-wear and couture, emphasizing materiality, longevity, and the beauty of imperfection. Every piece is handcrafted from pre-consumer waste—recycled, remnant, and deadstock textiles sourced locally—challenging traditional notions of garment-making through experimental construction and resourcefulness.
